Fall Film Fest
While wearing its hat as this publication’s film critic, Night & Day has disagreed with Christopher Kelly’s reviews of many individual movies. Nevertheless, it needs to be said that the Star-Telegram’s film critic cares just as much about independent and foreign cinema as we do here. Kelly presents his second annual Modern Cinema 2005: Great Movies You Haven’t Heard of Yet this weekend, and in the continued absence of a working mainstream film festival in Fort Worth, it may very well fill the void.
This year’s fest opens with David Redmon’s Mardi Gras: Made in China, which we’ve talked about in our pages already. The hottest ticket will no doubt be Pride & Prejudice, Joe Wright’s straightforward adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel starring Keira Knightley. Movie fans with a taste for more esoteric fare will want to see Noah Baumbach’s The Squid and the Whale, a comedy starring Laura Linney as a woman whose success as a writer pisses off her husband (Jeff Daniels), a faded novelist. Thom Andersen’s documentary Los Angeles Plays Itself traces the history of the city’s portrayal in movies, while Mikael Håfström’s Swedish high-school revenge movie Evil offers up more generic thrills. And if you’re really looking for something difficult, try Olivier Assayas’ Clean, which stars Maggie Cheung as a recovering drug addict and figures to show off the ferociously cerebral style that the French director developed in Irma Vep and demonlover.
