Supersuckers

Motherfuckers Be Trippin’\r\n(Mid-Fi Recordings)

Graham from Woodeye notwithstanding, I’m not a fan of rawk musos who wear cowboy hats — especially if the dudes are from Seattle. So I wasn’t favorably predisposed toward the recent releases from Camarosmith (ex-Zeke guys) or everybody’s favorite transplants from the Arizona desert to the PacNW, the Supersuckers. But I’m starting to reconsider.

The leadoff track tells the story: “Rock-n-Roll Records (Ain’t Selling This Year).” That’s as true here in the Fort as anywhere else in ClearChannelAmerica — witness the paltry turnout at a recent rawkin’ Wreck Room stand by locals the Sunday Drunks and A Capital Affair, Noo Yawkers the Bamboo Kids, and the Materialistics from Austin. It’s kinda disheartening to watch a band sweat blood before an audience of eight people, five of whom are in the band slated to play next. But it happens. Often.

The Supersuckers realize this, and they don’t care. Maybe that’s why they recently started their own label — either that, or they realized no one else would let them release a c.d. with a title that’s guaranteed to keep the disc out of all but the most chic disc emporiums (where black gear is de rigueur).

Frontman Eddie Spaghetti and his crew admit they’re not the world’s best musicians and also understand that it’s hardly relevant. They specialize in the kind of strut and thrash made famous the world over by AC/DC and Motorhead. The song titles are self-explanatory: “Rock Your Ass,” “Pretty Fucked Up,” “Bubblegum and Beer,” and, of course, the standout number, “Someday I Will Kill You.”

Having endured a year of cute fashion plates like the Strokes, the Hives, and the White Stripes being hailed by the mainstream press as “saviors of rock ’n’ roll,” I’m ready to cast aside my reservations and embrace the Supersuckers’ good old-fashioned dirty noise. These days, you have to take the Rawk where you can find it.
