Impugning the Opposition
To the editor: So poor Kendall McCook was relieved from his post as an English teacher at Tarrant County College for showing Farenheit 9/11 to his class (“The Fading Light of Freedom,” Jan. 19, 2005). This is revealed after a long list of boring 40-year-old baby-boomer war-protester clichés (the poor, homeless, justice, immigrants, free speech, unjust war, etc. Yawnnnnnn!). Perhaps there is more to this story than “free speech.”
What is an English teacher at a junior college doing showing a leftist propaganda film in his class? Didn’t his students take the class to learn sentence structure, clarity in reading and writing the English language, or perhaps to discuss great literature? Did Mr. McCook cheat his students of their class time in showing the film? In the spirit of free discussion, did Mr. McCook allow showing of an alternative film like Farenhype 9-11, which exposes the distortions and outright fabrications in Michael Moore’s movie? Did Mr. McCook allow spirited discussion of viewpoints other than his own or did he denigrate, ridicule, impugn, and intimidate those who voiced opposition to his admiration of socialist theory as happens all too frequently in the poisonous atmosphere of leftist political correctness in the humanities today?
Mr. McCook sounds like an unrequited hippie who has never replicated the fun he had during his protester days. Dennis Easley, R. V. Crain, Roy Gray, and a number of other of my college classmates and fellow members of the 82nd Airborne Division have their names on that black wall in Washington, D.C. By their actions, the protesters gave encouragement to the enemy, demoralized our soldiers, and paralyzed our politicians, and, I believe, are directly responsible for as many as 25 to 30 percent of those names. For that, Mr. McCook and his fellow protesters have earned my everlasting contempt and enmity.
