Dark New Day

\r\nTwelve Year Silence\r\n(Warner Bros. Records)

By Justin Press

Here’s 45 minutes I’ll never get back. An alleged “super group” of ex-members of Sevendust, Skrape, Doubledrive, and the touring bassist from Creed, Dark New Day has (let’s see — one, two, three, four) four strikes against it. I just wish I had known that before popping this c.d. into the player.

The band rumbles through the grunge-y angst that was kicked to the curb, oh, about 15 years ago (not even in an understandable, retro way). Just about every song begins with a soft, often acoustic guitar-based intro and then explodes into several humongous guitars ... just like every other song from the flannel-shirt, Seattle-inspired past. The entire disc is void of fresh ideas. You just gotta wonder: How in the hell did these guys even get a record deal? (Two words: industry connections.)

I guess you can assume that fans of Dark New Day’s past affiliations are going to eat this stuff up, but aren’t those fans on the fringe anyway? There weren’t enough of ‘em to make Skrape a household name (thank God), so what made Warner Bros. honchos put their butts on the line for such crap?

What’s worse is that Twelve Year Silence was obviously made for listeners to unleash their inner-Vikings to. A recommendation: Shelve Dark New Day and either pop in something else or, to approximate the value of listening to Twelve Year Silence, spend 45 minutes watching paint dry.
