What To Tell Them
To the editor: I am writing in response to one of your readers, Debbie Schmid, who wants to hear an answer about what it means if soldiers are willing to risk court-martial not to return to the Iraq war, and what we can tell the families of those who gave their lives in this war. I offer this: The answer to your first question relates to honor. Every conflict has seen a small minority of military personnel who refuse to honor their oath of service. I suspect that many of these individuals were OK with peacetime military service, pay, benefits, educational assistance, etc. However, when faced with war’s horrors, they decided they would unilaterally redefine their commitment. They deserve the court-martial they are “willing to risk.” What to say to the families of our fallen heroes? “Thanks!” They chose to perform their duties, and in so doing honored themselves, their families, their country, and their comrades. They are this generation’s finest and bravest. It is because of them Debbie, that you and I can sit, pen in hand, offering these thoughts.
