Acoustic Mafia

There probably hasn’t been a regular gig as successful or rewarding as the Acoustic Mafia’s monthly “First Sunday” shows at the Aardvark, where a steady crew of some of Cowtown’s best singer-songwriters eagerly gathers. Monday nights at the Wreck Room for Daniel Katsuk’s A-Hummin’ Acoustical Acupuncture comes close, as does the Black Dog Tavern’s Sunday night jazz jams — but no cigar.
“First Sunday” isn’t as novel as it once was; usually one of the regular cast of performers of Collin Herring, Brandin Lea, Tim Locke, or John Price has something else to do when play time comes. But the magic remains. It’s even been recorded, pressed, and packaged.
First Sunday ... Worst Monday is a collection of songs — some old, some new — by the Mafiosi, including former Valve frontman and notable producer Casey Diiorio and two former members of the defunct power-pop band The Action, Aardvark owner Danny Weaver and Joe Rose.
The disc, basically, is what you throw down on a table if some ignorant out-of-towner questions the quality of Fort Worth music. Entire artistic empires, such as the Elephant 6 collective in Athens, Ga., have been built around much, much less. Could gathering the Mafiosi under one banner signal the beginning of a new force in independent rock? First Sunday ... Worst Monday certainly doesn’t present any evidence to the contrary.
