Seven Channels had more success than many local bands, doing clever indie stuff, fads be damned. Now after a change of name, image, and sound, the group is geared for even greater things — commercially at least. You gotta wonder: Is abandoning an original project to copycat an entire genre worth it?

Putting on the runny-make-up-and-tight-t-shirt appearance of countless other bands and then fusing that look with a dark pop sound has worked out well for The Vanished: Its summer single “My Favorite Scar” can still be heard on Big D commercial radio. Catchy with a big hook, the song’s the product of capturing the sound of the moment and harnessing it for what it’s worth. The Vanished’s self-titled album is chock full of these three-minute wonders, and the band’s live shows have caught the attention of The Edge; the local “alt-rock” station has frequently called on The Vanished to fill slots in Edge-sponsored all-day extravaganzas.

The Vanished’s Ridglea Theater show this week allows these boys to show whether they, unlike Jibe (another local Edge baby), are more than just one song. The teenyboppers will be in the house, for sure, and fickle as they may be, they — not the labels — largely determine the direction of radio rock. They built The Vanished, after all.
