Q Cinema arrives a month early this year. Fort Worth’s gay and lesbian film festival has traditionally taken place in June, but this year it’s starting early to avoid competition with Hollywood’s summer blockbusters. (Moving it back a month is great, but why move it to a weekend when Star Wars is opening and the Van Cliburn kicks off?)
This year’s festival premieres in plusher digs than it’s ever had before — the Rave Motion Pictures Ridgmar theater hosts the opening night screening of Craig Chester’s Adam & Steve, a comedy that takes in the romantic travails of one gay couple (Chester and Malcolm Gets) and one straight one (Chris Kattan and Parker Posey). From there, the festival moves to the Sanders Theatre, at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center, where the highlights include Damion Dietz’ satire Beverly Kills (you may remember Dietz’ Peter Pan-inspired Neverland from two years ago) and Carrie Preston’s 29th and Gay, a comedy told from the point of view of a struggling and not particularly attractive gay Latino actor. On a more serious note, Tommy Stovall’s Hate Crime is a Dallas-made drama set in the Bible Belt.
The festival winds up in more familiar surroundings at Four Day Weekend Theater, where you can see Jim de Sève’s gay-marriage documentary Tying the Knot and Lee Friedlander’s Girl Play, an adaptation of a stage play about two actresses who fall in love for real while portraying lesbian lovers. With a liberal sprinkling of short films and free parties mixed in, Q Cinema looks to be bigger and better than ever.
