Classical Music Madness

Classical music devotees will be up to their ears in the stuff this week kicking off at TCU on Wednesday, when various TCU music professors provide a preview of the upcoming Carnegie Hall world premiere of music by Eric Ewazen and Samuel Zyman.
Two additional works by the Mexican composer Zyman will be performed at the Modern at the Modern concert on Saturday, which also spotlights pieces by Argentinians Osvaldo Golijov and Esteban Benzecry. Golijov’s sorrowful lament “Lúa descolorida” was sung by Dawn Upshaw with FWSO two weeks ago in a performance that made the entire building hold its collective breath — and it’s on the Modern program as well.
Later in the week, the spotlight shifts back to TCU, where the screening recitals for aspiring contestants at the upcoming Van Cliburn Competition take place. There’s not as much adventurous fare as you might expect from 27 different pianists, but the concerts still include two performances of John Corigliano’s Étude Fantasy on tap (and three of Ravel’s La Valse), plus Scriabin’s Seventh Piano Sonata, which the composer subtitled “The White Mass” (an antithesis to his Ninth, “The Black Mass”). The music of Dutilleux, Szymanowski, Messiaen, Miaskovsky, and Ginastera will be played as well as the bigger names.
The TCU chamber concert is 7:30 Wed at Ed Landreth Auditorium, 2800 S University Dr, FW. Admission is free. Call 817-257-7232.
Modern at the Modern is at 2pm Sat at Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, 3200 Darnell St, FW. Tickets are $12-15. Call 817-335-9000.
The Van Cliburn screening recitals are Sat-Tue at Ed Landreth Auditorium, 2800 S University Dr, FW. Admission is free. Call 817-335-9000.
