Hardy Farewell

Bruce Wood Dance Company has kept a low profile the last six months, getting its house in order and dealing with a budget shortfall. But the company is back this weekend with an evening of Bruce Wood revivals.
The program selections are special, reflecting the tastes of the late Hardy Sanders, a local philanthropist and major backer of the company who died recently. BWDC board president Joe Groves says Sanders was vocal in his likes and dislikes of the company’s repertory, and the evening dedicated to his memory includes three of his favorites, including For Buddy, Home, and Piazzolla de Prisa.
For Buddy was created with Shields-Collins Bray, staff pianist of the Fort Worth Symphony and long-time friend of the choreographer’s; Bray’s nickname, to circumvent that daunting hyphenation, is Buddy. Bray was originally to accompany some classical pieces for Wood, but those pieces somehow glided into pop tunes. The ending has been changed this time, with “I Got Rhythm” replacing “Here’s a Rainy Day” for a more upbeat finale.
Wood’s mystical Home, set to portions of the Fauré Requiem, is a foray into metaphysics that many consider one of Wood’s finest ideas. It is certainly thought-provoking and seems to mean different things to different viewers, with Wood keeping mum about what it means to him.
A great favorite when it first appeared, Piazzolla de Prisa, with its vibrant South American rhythms and splashy choreography, makes a rousing first impression and may be one of the company’s most popular ballets.
