Fresher Air

To the editor: Regarding the question of Air America (Second Thought, April 20, 2005) — NPR is not enough. NPR and KERA do a very good job of reporting news and facts, and I am sick of people saying that they’re liberal for doing so. Facts do not have a liberal bias. Facts are facts.
There is a deep void in our local talk radio that KXEB has filled with Air America Radio. The shows are live, and they include callers and discussions that are sometimes absent from NPR.
Speaking for myself, I like my liberal pundits to have sharp teeth. The only way to balance the right-wing vitriol that exists on our local airwaves is to use the same strategies they do. We are not going to get anywhere preaching to the choir. We have to talk in a language the other side understands. If you are secure in your political beliefs and want everyone to play nice, good for you. I lived through eight years of talk radio slandering a president I respected, and I accepted it as Rush Limbaugh and his peers’ right to free speech. To have these same people say that it is un-American to voice opposition under a Republican administration is hypocritical.
For those of us on the left, who have heard nothing but “trash talk” from the right, I believe it is about time we had some “trash talking” of our own.

To the editor: Thank you for Tracy Everbach’s article on Air America. But if you listen to Air America Radio all day, you’ll see that there are lots of differences between them and right-wing radio — AAR tells the truth. They do not make up lies as do Rush and Sean and Savage and others. The truth is truly refreshing to hear — truly. They have saved so many of us — having a place to go after the election, with all the distorted exit polls. Randi Rhodes researches everything. Rush comes out with half a sound bite and twists meanings.
Rachel Maddow is a Rhodes scholar, and has a PhD — she starts off AAR at 5 a.m. That really contrasts with Rush, who never finished school. It is not all screaming and shouting — it is truth- telling, sometimes slowly, because the heads of the right-wingers are totally full of shit from years of having no alternative. Give it a chance. The truth is the most important value we have in America.
