School Plays
The classical music groups, the museums, the regular theater troupes — they all make way this week for a plethora of college theater productions, and likely there’s one near you for your enjoyment.
TCU does Lanford Wilson’s murder mystery Book of Days, an uncompromising look at the venal side of a small town, with Thornton Wilder-esque bits of narration and chorus. Murder also occupies (in a lighter way) TCC Southeast’s The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940, set at a Broadway producer’s estate.
Going in a different direction, UTA stages Little Old Broadway, an evocation of the days of vaudeville and George M. Cohan, replete with reconstructed Joseph Weber and Lew Fields routines. TCC South, meanwhile, is doing Lysistrata, Aristophanes’ delightful farce about a war between Athens and Sparta that’s stopped when the women of the two nation-states band together and stop having sex with their husbands until the war is resolved. (The peace negotiations are conducted by some very fidgety men.)
TCC Northeast puts on The Outsiders, based on S.E. Hinton’s novel about a turf war between rich and poor kids at a 1960s Tulsa high school. The novel famously spawned a 1983 Francis Ford Coppola movie that featured many unknown actors who’d soon go on to fame.
And if you’re looking for a play in a unique venue, there’s TWU’s production of Museum up in Denton. It’s about the various characters who drift through a museum on the last day of a major exhibit. Fittingly, the school’s not staging it in their theater, but in their art gallery.
