Sculptures, Patterns, Arlington
While the Amon Carter Museum dives into its past for its current show, the Arlington Museum of Art is taking from the present not one but two exhibits. Layered, Stacked, Assembled will fill the mezzanine gallery with works that call attention to their materials and their processes, including Ellen Frances Tuchman’s works made from found matchbook covers, Janet Tyson’s sculptural explorations of children’s plastic building blocks, and Rusty Scruby’s collages of drawings, playing cards, and photographs.
The main space is given over to Rock, Paper, Scissors, another exhibit that concerns itself with solid objects, namely sculptures. Harry Geffert’s bronzes imitate natural forms, while Virginia Fleck’s plastic bags are stitched together to form an inflatable quilted pillow. Sarah Nix Ginn makes human torso-like shapes out of dressmakers’ patterns, and Ken Little picks up the fashion angle in an even more striking way, affixing paper money onto steel frameworks to make suits and dresses. With the other galleries having shown off their best stuff last week, it’s time for the AMA to join the fun.
