Contemporary Classical

On one episode of season two of The West Wing, Martin Sheen’s President Jed Bartlet betrays his musical prejudices when he’s scheduled to attend a concert of modern music. “Modern music sucks! Anything written after 1860 sucks!” he shouts. Informed that he’s hearing a world premiere, he says, “It is not classical music if the guy finished writing it this afternoon.”

Contemporary music tends to run up against this attitude with classical music audiences, and the only chance it has of overcoming that is to be heard. The Van Cliburn Foundation and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth hope to address that in the inaugural concert of Modern at The Modern, a new program that looks to present today’s music to Fort Worth’s audiences.

Pianist Andrew Russo made a splash at the 2001 Van Cliburn Competition by playing George Crumb’s A Little Suite for Christmas, A.D. 1979, a piece that required him to not only play the piano’s keys, but also reach inside the piano and pluck the strings. He plays that piece again for this concert, as well as John Corigliano’s Etude Fantasy, a collection of virtuoso technical exercises linked by 12-tone compositional techniques. The concert concludes with Marc Mellits’ Fruity Pebbles, a 1998 trio for piano, violin, and cello. The composer will be on hand to comment on his work. Between this program and the Modern’s new film series, the Darnell Street museum promises to be an interesting place to be this spring.

Modern at The Modern debuts at 2pm Sat at Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, 3200 Darnell St, FW. Tickets are $20-25. Call 817-335-9000.
