Audio Philes and Alan at The Aardvark

Putting out an album will give anyone the sweats, particularly if it’s an artist’s first crack at it. But by virtue of the sound of Little Pieces of a Little Something Small, John Price’s long-awaited full-length debut, there’s nothing anyone associated with this record should be nervous about. Little Pieces is a well-polished, well-produced gem.
The record retains the blues and country sensibilities that Price started out with, but it also has a rock edge. Price describes his sound as “melodic rock with a kind of roots-folk thing coming in.” Radio-friendly, if not a little too radio-friendly, Little Pieces finds Price and his band fusing together sonic elements of the alt-country scene — judicious use of steel guitar, slightly off drum beats — with rock conceits.
You could attribute the album’s cohesiveness to Todd and Toby Pipes, who produced Little Pieces at Base Propulsion Laboratories in Dallas, and also to Price, who said he took the time to actually enjoy the process of making a record. “I feel great,” he said. “It changed my life.”
