After six months, Marcos Escobar has finally stripped all of the red tape from the University Drive space formerly occupied by Scooner’s and is making his big debut as a club owner with Halo this weekend.
Escobar signed the lease in September and has since been working hard, remodeling the cavernous room and assuring the Texas Alcohol and Beverage Commission that his joint is on the level.
TABC officers have expressed concern over Halo’s opening as a result of Scooner’s bad rep. Escobar is ready and willing to ease their minds. “We’ll have scanners at the door, front entry only, all those types of things to make sure we’re not serving under-age customers.”
Not that Escobar has plans to be the neighborhood Colonel Clink or anything, but he definitely wants to appeal to a (relatively) more mature lounge lizard. “Scooner’s was a really grungy, dirty bar with the typical problems,” he said. “Here, we’ll control the atmosphere, serve with all glassware, offer 10 different martinis. You know, there’s a lot of people in this area who have to drive all the way downtown just to relax after work.”
For those of us who dig the TCU area — not the TCU demographic — the addition of Halo is a godsend. Plus, with the opening of both Panther City Coffee Co. and Tiff & Andi’s Place (where the old Boom Room used to be, in Bluebonnet Circle), University-West Berry terrain might not be just for kids anymore. Look out, West Seventh.
