PHOTOS: 1 A D V E R T I S E M E N T A D V E R T I S E M E N T Cracker By Anthony Mariani You may remember Cracker primarily from the unique, countrified, MTV-friendly hit “Low” and pretty much the entire album from which the “Hey! Hey! Hey!” song was singled out as an A-plus example of what smart, musically skilled rednecks can do when not fixing cars. Arriving at around the same time as NASCAR nation and the Georgia Satellites, Cracker seemed destined for one-hit-wonderdom. True, the band has disappeared from the forefront of popular consciousness, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t been developing a much less fickle, much more committed fan base by continuing to make unique, countrified, MTV-friendly music ... if MTV gave a shit about music anymore. Cracker — David Lowery and John Hickman, with friends — is working on material for a full-length to be released next year. The band is also touring, and at its intimate, acoustic-based show at the comfortable Aardvark this weekend, don’t be surprised if you hear a couple of Camper Van Beethoven songs. The SXSW darlings are also helmed by Lowery, a producer/sideman extraordinaire (Joan Osborne, Sparklehorse, Counting Crows) and a “crack” musician.
