Mollie’s Mix\r\nKill Rock Stars Records

By Matthew Smith

Each year, Kill Rock Stars Records releases a selection from their current roster, providing a potent countermeasure to those vile Now, That’s What I Call Crap! Top-40 barrel-scraping collections. As with earlier KRS comps, Mollie’s Mix thoughtfully avoids doing what nearly all comp makers do: Offer two or three prime cuts surrounded by a bunch of fatty numbers. Instead, Mollie’s exhibits deft song selection, doing what a mix tape is supposed to — weave prima facie disparate genres into a sensible, cohesive whole. The disc jumps smoothly from one style to another, revealing numerous surprises throughout.

Here be rock, harder rock, techno/dance, and soft morning waft, even a country remake. “Bless Me,” by Tight Bro’s From Way Back When, sounds positively AC/DC. “Oh!” the bounciest cut from Sleater-Kinney’s One Beat is here. So is Sport Murphy’s good-timey “Beatles, Stepping Off the Plane,” in which the Fab Four’s arrival eradicates racism, the scourge of Pat Boone, and even pulls the bug out of Bono’s ass. It’ll all make perfect sense once you hear it.

The Decemberists’ pastoral lushness plays like Oasis might sound, if they were still worth listening to. On the other hand, The Goxxip’s “777595577@!!!” is dada dissonance, Sonic Youth covering Metal Machine Music, sure to clear most of the room while enticing the truly adventurous. More worthwhile goodies are here than space permits. Suffice to say, you’ll probably find a few new favorites.

The whole shebang, all 21 tracks, runs a mere $5. Visit www.killrockstars.com to order. Mollie, since you asked, is the pooch on the cover. Given such excellent taste, it’s a shame she can’t be hired away to program our local commercial radio stations.
