Every year in our annual Music Awards, the nominees in the Cover Band category almost always tend to be single-band tribute acts, as opposed to groups that cover wide varieties of music. There’s Oliver’s Army (Elvis Costello), Queen For A Day (Queen), Me and My Monkey (The Beatles), and a bunch more. To the hardcore scenester, cover bands are the devil’s children. They promulgate formulaic music, the scenester says, stealing fans from the original musician down the street who’s working his ass off to put an end to formulaic music. What the bitter scenester fails to realize, however, is that nearly all tribute bands are also complicit in the perpetuation of rock music that has neat beginnings, middles, and ends and fits snugly into the commercial rock radio format. Ever see a Sun Ra tribute act around here? Or a Sonic Youth one? Me neither.

The latest tribute act in town is either a blessing or a curse — it’s still too soon to tell. Led by Assl Pose, the dudes in the Guns ’N Roses tribute act Child O Mine are not doing anyone any favors by shelving (if only temporarily) the construction of original music in deference to cashing in on somebody else’s handiwork. But the guys are good for this much: They may be able to introduce a new music lover to one of the greatest hard rock bands of all time, and, while they may not be great, they’re probably no better or worse than the real thing, circa 1994.
