Ohmygod, has Tarrant County’s favorite little kewpie doll become a jaded Hollywood diva? Say it ain’t so, Kelly!

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported July 1 that last year’s American Idol runner-up, Sideshow Bob, er, Justin Guarini, was ticketed by police after witnesses said he zoomed onto the beach while riding a personal watercraft at Joe Pool Lake and almost ran over 5-year-old Allison Heizer of Fort Worth.

Guarini was with several friends, including Idol winner and Burleson native Kelly Clarkson. The Star-T article, under the headline “ ‘Idol’ star, Guarini, gets ticket at Joe Pool Lake,” described how Guarini rolled off the moving watercraft before it stopped and ran away laughing. The story was picked up by hundreds of television, radio, and print media outlets across the country. Most of them characterized Guarini as reckless and unconcerned with the safety of others, while Clarkson came across as an innocent bystander. For instance, E! Online’s July 2 report ran under the headline, “Justin’s No ‘Idol’ to Beachgoers.”

“They kind of missed my point,” said Clint Heizer, a North Richland Hills city marshal who was visiting the lake with his family when his daughter was almost struck.

Guarini was apologetic and sincere, but Clarkson was loud and defiant, Heizer said. “Kelly, she was the biggest mouth of them all,” he said. “She was standing several yards away and talking at the top of her lungs about how they didn’t do anything and nobody got hurt and leave them alone.”

After the Star-T story, Heizer was besieged by media phone calls for two days. “I had no idea,” he said. “I thought y’all must have a slow news week to be messing with this.” Three different television shows, including Inside Edition, asked him to appear on their programs, but he turned them all down and stopped returning calls to reporters.

Ironically, the Heizers had rooted for Clarkson during her run for Idol stardom. “I supported her during the whole show, and to have her act that way really blew her image with me and my family and friends,” he said.

In a related report, nobody at Joe Pool Lake was able to resuscitate From Justin To Kelly, the duo’s movie that — in police lingo — is a floater.
