No Chance for Bill

To the editor: Thank you for Jeff Prince’s two recent excellent articles; the first about Lynda “Texas Lil” Arnold (“Still Wranglin’,” Jan. 10, 2005), and the other about Bill Howard (“Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch,” May 4, 2005). I have known Lynda for 37 years. I was her first employee on the ranch at Justin. After she bought the place, she hired me to sit on the cattle guard with a shotgun to prevent certain folks from stealing everything on the ranch that wasn’t nailed down. While I did not work there continuously thereafter, I was the ranch general manager for a couple of years in the mid-1990s and afterward drove a tractor every weekend during party days and nights alongside Bill.
Bill was hardworking, dedicated to Lynda and the ranch, kept to himself until you got to know him, and even then was guarded as if to say, “I like it here, Lynda treats me well, and as long as I keep my nose clean and work hard, I’ve found a home and environment I can live in and enjoy for many years to come.” In West Texas speak, “Ain’t no way Bill would burn down his home, his job, his security, and put Lynda in harm’s way in the process.” Thanks again for your fair, impartial, and coherent reporting.
FYI, Bill’s attorney Clint Broden had contacted me to testify at the trial (that never happened) both as a character witness for Bill and as a ranch expert who could say that no one could identify anyone if they were looking from the pool area to the Longhorn area at dusk or later. I regret I never had a chance ... but then neither did Bill Howard.
