Solidarnos´c´!
Distinguished speakers with confrontational styles and their own working-class views of the world come calling at UNT this week. Documentarian, author, and all-around gadfly Michael Moore arrives on campus first. The director of Roger & Me has made an uneven but entertaining career out of being an agitator, and he’s here to discuss and sign copies of his latest book, Stupid White Men: And Other Excuses for the State of the Nation.
The bigger event, though, comes two days later. Let’s face it — we don’t get Nobel laureates around here too often, much less ones who can be counted among the great leaders of the 20th century. Through his actions as the head of Polish Solidarity in the 1980s, Lech Walesa helped alter the course of world history by challenging the authority of his country’s Communist government. Next to Mikhail Gorbachev, the former electrician proved to be the most important figure in bringing about the “velvet revolutions” that ended Soviet influence over the region and eventually finished off the Soviet Union itself. His common-man style didn’t translate so well during the five years he served as Poland’s president, but he remains a magnetic, larger-than-life personality in international politics. He will address the subject of Eastern European democracy and economic reform.
