100 Damned Guns

Mixing Dentonian artfulness with Fort Worthian grit, 100 Damned Guns makes old-timey music that incorporates modern sonic touches, like electric gee-tars, and modern literary conceits, like telling a tale from the perspective of a hanged man. The band hasn’t been around long but is managing to land good gigs at happenin’ clubs. After opening for long-time bluegrass-kicking stalwarts 1100 Springs at the Wreck Room this weekend, the Guns will spread their sepia-toned country-rock across the Metroplex. On the itinerary are stops at Double Wide, 1919 Hemphill, and Rubber Gloves Rehearsal Studios. The band doesn’t bowl you over with virtuosic talent or efficient tunes. With Chris Caldwell (electric guitar), Judd Pemberton (acoustic guitar, lead/backing vocals), Dave Sherrill (mandolin, lead/backing vocals), Lynn Stewart (upright bass), and Dillon Strange (drums), 100 Damned Guns all pound the same chords and beats at the same time, making up for the lack of nuance with a big, loud, steady-rollin’ wagon of sound. Keep your ears peeled for the band’s forthcoming e.p., a handful of songs that together mark 100 Damned Guns’ first official studio outing. Past recordings, including some tracks posted on MySpace, were recorded in somebody’s house on what the band considers inferior equipment. Old-timey music on good equipment? O brother.
