Requiem Marks New Beginning

By Leonard Eureka

At last, Fort Worth gets to see Ben Stevenson’s heart-wrenching setting of Mozart’s Requiem that premiered last season in Dallas to great acclaim. Texas Ballet Theater features the artistic director’s seismic ballet during the company’s season-opening program this weekend at Bass Hall.
Don’t let the title fool you. This is no reverent look at a musty old mass but a full-blooded anti-war cry, danced only by the group’s male wing and supported by an awesome score. Schola Cantorum of Texas will provide the vocal power and be accompanied by the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra under Jack Buckhannan’s direction. If you see any ballet this year, let it be this one.
To temper the introspective mood, Stevenson has choreographed a new ballet for his ballerinas called Stormy Weather, set to several recorded songs by the late Judy Garland, which is a tribute, really, to the tremendous fund-raising effort made by the dancers during the company’s current rainy financial season.
“The Man That Got Away,” “Zing Went the Strings of My Heart,” and a few familiar numbers, including Garland’s signature tune, “Over The Rainbow,” will be danced.

TBT’s Mozart’s Requiem runs Fri-Sun at Bass Performance Hall, 555 Commerce St, FW. Ticket prices start at $19. Call 877-828-9200.
