Return of the King
In 1933, when the original version of a movie about a 50-foot-tall gorilla first hit the silver screen, life was pretty crazy: The United States was recovering from a huge economic collapse that sent reverberations across the globe (especially in a volatile little enclave called Germany, whose economy inexplicably hinged upon ours), the gap between the have’s and have-not’s had never been wider, and the New York Football Giants and Chicago Bears were tops in their respective conferences.
Sound familiar?
With the recent national theatrical release of King Kong, a re-make by Lord of the Rings series director Peter Jackson, Fort Worth’s Lone Star Film Society plans on showing the earlier ape-tastic flick the way it was seen by audiences of yore — on the big screen. Hosted by former Dixie Chicks member Laura Lynch Tull, the screening will also include hors d’oeuvres and bar.
Though you may get a kick out of the corny special effects, the over-over-acting, and the great costuming, the thing to do — to really appreciate the classic — is just sit back and pretend that you’re trying for a moment to escape the ominous Depression-Era shadow that lingers outside the theater doors. Shouldn’t be too hard, considering.
