Since the release of last year’s Causing a Catastrophe — Live c.d., Flickerstick has been keeping a low profile — which does not mean they’ve been resting on their laurels. This month sees the release of To Madagascar and Back, a new six-song e.p. that was produced by the same guy who’ll be helping Flick put out a full-length early next year, Keith Cleversley (Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, Hum). And by virtue of Madagascar — stocked with full-bodied, textured, juicy rawk songs in which melody and attitude reign supreme — the new c.d. should pretty much kick major ass.
It’s true, though, that over the past year, Brandin Lea and Co. have been visible onstage only intermittently. Their “unplugged” performance with an augmented lineup that included Alan’s Doug Polhamus was the highlight of this year’s Fort Worth Weekly Music Awards show. Lea’s been a frequent onstage guest of pals like Tim Locke, Collin Herring, and John Price at shows at the Aardvark, the Moon, and the Saffire Lounge. And last week, he and guitarist Cory Kreig played an acoustic set at Denton’s R-Bar. Meanwhile, drummer/monster showman Dominic Weir has played a handful of gigs with local supergroup Mermaid Purse (with members of Doosu, Red Animal War, and the Feds).
Sharing the stage with Flick will be the Fort’s rockin’-est teens, Green River Ordinance, most of whom have now actually graduated from high school. — Ken Shimamoto
