There’s a Light

Every day is a gift, and we should all be thankful for every peaceful minute that goes by. The past few months here in Cowtown have been relatively tragedy-free — and HearSay now feels like a shithead for taking for granted those halcyon days. Seen through the prism of local music, this winter is turning out to be one dark, Lord of the Rings-dark, period of time: People are saying that the Ridglea Theater’s days are numbered; Soviet Space fired one of its members for off-the-stage antics unbecoming of a civilized human being; The Wreck Room is at the top of its game, showcasing some of the best bands Fort Worth has seen in a long time, yet getting a decent amount of people in the door to show support for these great bands remains problematic. All this, and HearSay hasn’t even begun to think about the brutal beating of an Aardvark bartender after hours near Berry Street or, outside The Scene, impending war with Iraq.

Everything, it seems, is looking gloomy. The only thing to do is savor the good times with friends and family and take solace in the belief that the sun will still rise no matter what. Give thanks, all, every day.

There’s a City Light

The City Lights Singers, who had a good run through North Texas in the early 1990s, will revive their unique interpretations of the musical styles that marked the first half of last century at MacHenry’s Upstairs on Sat, Nov. 30. The show starts at 9pm.

Known for their great ensemble playing and strong vocal arrangements, the City Lights Singers are led by local film guru Michael H. Price (keyboards, guitar, harmonica) and Greg Jackson (guitar, banjo, mandolin). The lineup also features Black Dog Tavern jazz wrangler Mike Pellecchia on sax and clarinet, and Kathleen Jackson (Greg’s sister) on bass.

The price is right (no cover) so don’t miss this one. MacHenry’s (formerly the Attic Lounge) is located at 3404 Pelham Rd at Camp Bowie in Fort Worth. Call 817-377-0202 for more info.

Draggy

The de facto mayor of underground Fort Worth is a guy who works at the Black Dog Tavern by the name of Shaggy. This good Irish lad has been spending the past couple of live music nights at the Tavern dressed as a woman. Everyone at the big Marchel Ivery show last Sunday was expecting a bodacious Shaggy to help welcome the Dallas-based jazzbo to town and celebrate the Black Dog’s fifth year of offering live jazz on Sunday nights. It was too bad that good ol’ Shaggy was in his “normal” guy clothes. From HearSay and everyone else who was getting a kick out of “Draggy,” here’s a message to the Queen of Cool: Keep your panties on. The Scene needs a little spice.
