Not one but two peculiar, acoustic-based shows are happening this Friday. At Axis, Brandin Lea of Flickerstick will headline a bill that also features Kirk Baxley from Greatness in Tragedy and Brad Skistimas from Five Times August. At the Moon, singer-songwriter Josh Weathers handles the entire evening by his lonesome. Though vastly different, both shows are recommended.

Usually, when Lea plays solo, he’s anything but — there’s always a random virtuoso in the audience who’s only a shot of Jaeger away from being talked into providing accompaniment. Maybe violinist Doug Polhamus from art-rockers Alan will pop onstage. Maybe former Audiophiles mastermind and now burgeoning producer Jordan Roberts will pluck a little six-string. And — what a coinky-dink! — maybe Walker Wood will be in the house with his theremin in his back pocket. Not that anybody’s complainin’ about the results: The February Chorus, Lea’s chief vehicle for solo work, includes the three aforementioned musos, plus about 20 other North Texas-based creative types. Though as rare in the wilds of the local music scene as a spotted owl in the woods, the dark, brooding, haunting, David Lynch-ian February Chorus is simply one of the best bands in North Texas. Not that Lea can’t handle a room by himself; he undoubtedly can. But if there’s a chance that the Chorus may partially materialize for a gig, cancel whatever other plans you have and make the scene.

Down in the trenches is Josh Weathers, an Arlingtonian who’s almost as light as Lea and the Chorus are shadowy. Weathers’ sound is pop-rocking radio-friendly fare. He does that whole guitar-based, white-boy, more-soulful-than-thou Jason Mraz-John Mayer-Ray LaMontagne thing, but — miraculously — he manages to be not as annoying. (He doesn’t sound as if he’s making sweet love to his, um, instrument on every single damn song.) He’s definitely an up-and-comer to watch. — Anthony Mariani
