Nice View, Other Stuff

HearSay, amazingly, has learned to take in entire shows on Diet Coke and Sprite and Diet-Coke-Sprite mixed. (Sip, crunch ice, deep breath, sip, crunch ice, etc.) Amazing how much ... better everything is. Take the revitalized PVK, now known as Cityview. Young turks hell-bent for black socks and Puma sneakers, the quartet played the Wreck Room recently to a packed house of Gen-Y’ers, mostly pretty, “X”-marked punky chillun. Ya know, those Abercrombie & Fitch-wearin’ kids whose glorious youth proscribes them from visually comprehending something as immaterial as a thirtysomething alt-weekly local music columnist. (You know you’re old — and invisible — when you’re bumped into repeatedly and neither begged for your pardon nor cursed. Furniture is treated more humanely.) HearSay, having escaped from the manse for a few minutes, was nonetheless content to ogle the crowd, crunch ice, and, oh yeah, dig the Cityview sound — poppy yet tough and sludgy, just like rock should be. The gig was the band’s second Wreck performance since disbanding two years ago. The boys sound as if they haven’t missed a beat. For more information and to find where they’re playing next, surf to www.cityviewmusic.com/band.php. To hear their music — and ogle their “friends” in the privacy of your own home (crunch ... crunch ... crunch) — cruise to profiles.myspace.com/users/3815695. ... In the words of Dubya on a Wreck Room flyer: “I bet you hippies vote this time!” Yes, Sir George, you’re damn right. An earlier column on — excuse the tweener patois — “rocking” the vote drew many helpful responses, including one from Anne “Ma” Barker, mother of Collin Herring guitarist Austin Barker and general good-deed-doer. She said that there are essentially two ways for club owners to mobilize the community. One is by passing out registration forms at the club — and hoping that they get mailed in by their filler-outers. Two is by sending someone — an employee, possibly — down to the courthouse to get deputized. Either way, it’s a little effort toward a lot of potential reward. What are you damn, dirty hippies waiting for?!? ... One of HearSay’s, and the Weekly’s, favorite singer-songwriters is back on the boards. John Lamonica, fresh from the studio with Todd and Toby Pipes (Hi-Fi Drowning, John Price, Lauren Fine), is busting out soon with a wealth of recorded material, including stuff from his band Tiebreaker, some recorded by Casey Diiorio (Valve), and solo stuff. The band opens for riotous rockers Red Animal War, Fri. at the Wreck. ... Having lost young Papa HearSay to cancer many moons ago, your columnist is all too familiar with the disease. Any little thing toward finding a cure is a lot. Club Dada’s doing its part, this Sat., by hosting a benefit for the Oasis of Hope, a cancer research center. Bands scheduled to perform include Goodwin, Sleepy Atlantis, Pablo and the Hemphill 7, and Woodeye. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for kids under 12. All ages until 9 p.m. 2720 Elm St., Dallas. 214-744-DADA.
