To the editor: Answers for Sharon King (Letters, July 12, 2006):

First — she sounds much more like a life member of the Republican Party “right-wing branch” than E.R. Bills sounds like a lifelong Democrat or “paid consultant.” Besides, given Bush’s penchant for alienating moderate members of his own party, what’s wrong with being a lifelong Democrat these days? The Supreme Court did “install” Bush by stopping any re-counts, thereby giving the state of Florida by a slim margin to a candidate without the majority vote. There were U.S. connections with Osama bin Laden before 9/11 — do “connections” between Iraq and “terrorists” justify the Iraq war? Bush introduced an effort to amend the U.S. Constitution disallowing marriage between homosexuals, so what was the point of that besides an attempt to deny civil rights to homosexuals?

Lying and bungling by Democrats? Did they bungle Katrina, WMDs, the Iraq war, etc.? Guess that’s why most voters polled want Democrats back in power. I’m proud of the unbiased Fort Worth Weekly, which is willing to publish the whining of the Bush Right occasionally.

Second, I at least admire the compassion of Scott Langley, who has a rather “Christian” position against the death penalty. I recall a Christian author who argued that the “pro-life” position should apply across the board, not just for the fetus, but the resulting human being as well. Imagine if we looked more at why some people turn out to be so destructive. Look at the families destroyed on the perpetrators’ side. Where is your compassion, Sharon?

Finally, regarding the Weekly’s barbs aimed at Richard Connor: He was never that much of a newspaperman anyway. More like an opportunistic, ego-driven politician with bad people skills. No wonder serious journalists wanted to start some competition. After he left, the Star-T followed the competition’s lead and began covering the truth about the Fort Worth school district’s fiascos. Best thing that ever happened to Fort Worth news.
