We here at the Weekly love local music. And we love a party. And we love anything that gives us a way to rationalize spending money we don’t really have on alcohol and, uh, high times. So what better way to spend Sunday night than by helping us take over the Ridglea Theater with some of the best local acts as part of the Weekly’s 6th or 7th annual Music Awards?
The card for the evening is — how you say? — eclectic. The first two acts on the bill, both nominated in the Best Live Band category, are guaranteed to have footloose HearSay kicking off its Sunday shoes. With a year and a half’s worth of shows under their belts, Pablo and the Hemphill 7 are masters of moving a crowd with righteous reggae riddims. Latin Express has been on the boards for a little longer — try 28 years — and “the family that plays together,” who graced our cover back in February, will be holding forth with their distinctive mix of Latin, jazz, and R&B sounds.
The other half of the evening’s entertainment is heavy on rock starpower, as befits two of the nominees in the Best Rock category. John Price, always the coolest guy in the room, will first schmooze heavily and later perform tunes from his entry for Album of the Year, the splendid Little Pieces of a Little Piece of Something Small, including Song of the Year candidate “Questionably Red.” Closing the show with a rare acoustic performance will be Flickerstick, fronted by Best Male Vocalist nominee Brandin Lea, who’d surely win the award for Best Rock ’n’ Roll Hair hands down, if such a category existed.
And be not afraid: Rumors that Wreck Room publicist Sheldon I. Yaylo will appear in John Price drag — cowboy hat, shades, and mutton-chop ’burns — are greatly exaggerated.
