Romantica\r\n(Jetset Records)

By Christy Goldfinch

This is the album to cue up after a satisfying snuggle with your sweetie. Romantica, the seventh release from plaintive sentimentalists Luna, fairly drips with post-coital glow. Opening track “Lovedust” sets the stage with candlelight, as Dean Wareham croons “The air is creamy / You look so dreamy” against loungey guitars and languorous percussion. “Dizzy,” set to the tune of Van Halen’s “Jump” as strained through a Velvet Underground cheesecloth, might prompt another round: “Your eyes make me weak and your lips make me dizzy / I want you to see just how good it can be.”

Through a decade of lineup and label changes, Luna has honed the art of dreamy guitar-pop with entrancing melodies and silly-smart lyrics. As lead vocalist, Wareham is neither perfect of pitch nor wide of range, but his Lou Reed Jr. throatiness and his gentle, unpretentious delivery are hypnotically seductive. Wareham gets vocal support from new bassist Britta Phillips, whose sultry voice co-stars in the doo-wop duet “Mermaid Eyes” and whose backing “ooh-ooh-ooh” uplifts the pensive “Weird and Woozy,” a lovelorn lament over a woman who “speaks Spanish in her sleep”: “There’s sadness in your eyes / A secret in your sigh.”

The perfect soundtrack for pillow talk, Romantica speaks to the hungry as well as the satiated. Next time someone asks you, “Honey, what are you thinking about?” toss out these lines from “Renee Is Crying”: “Salt and pepper squid / And Singapore noodles / I could look at your face / For oodles and oodles.” And get ready for Round Three.
