Todd Lewis
By Ken Shimamoto
You gotta like the idea behind the Burden Brothers: a coupla veteran musos who’ve been through the music-biz wringer and taken matters into their own hands.
Todd Lewis’ previous band, the Toadies, towered head, shoulders, and maybe even nipples above the Fort Worth-Dallas indie rock crowd in the same way that Dallas’ Nervebreakers once did over the local punk scene. Taz Bentley paid dues aplenty drumming for Reverend Horton Heat, Tenderloin, and Izzy Stradlin’s Ju Ju Hounds. Add a revolving cast of refugees from GWAR, Hagfish, Pinkston, Ministry, and Baboon, and you’ve got a unit with some cred.
The Burden Brothers are as much a marketing concept as they are a band. A deal with Last Beat Records allows them to get their music to fans almost as quickly as it’s recorded, via www.burdenbrothersmusic.com — be sure to type the “music” or you’ll get the site for some mechanical contractors in Dallas — or in spiffy collectible packages with t-shirts, stickers, and other promotional schmatter. Quite an improvement over the Toadies’ relationship with Interscope Records, whose glacial release schedules frustrated the band and contributed materially to its demise. Those like me who have retarded computers will have to wait for the release of the promised full-length, once there’s enough material in the can.
With Lewis presumably rejuvenated by a couple of holiday reunion shows with the Toadies, the Brothers return to the venue where they road-tested their act before taking it to SXSW last March. He’s still got the pipes, and he sounds just as pissed off in this new setting as he did on Pleather. Thirtysomethings who got their rock ‘n’ roll wings at Mad Hatters should be out in force, as should youngsters who teethed on “Possum Kingdom” when it was radio fodder.
