Artrepreneurs Needed
To the editor: I have never bought into the “public art” concept simply because those committees tend to ignore most working artists who would like just a little support. How about support for an “artist enterprise zone” where “artrepreneurs” could thrive as small business owners and perhaps create jobs? There are already public art venues that educate and serve the public with great art from many local artists. One in particular is Art on the Boulevard on Camp Bowie, but one would never know it. I base that statement on a recent conversation. A couple visiting from Abilene asked if there were any co-op art galleries in Fort Worth. The reply, “Well I don’t know,” was spoken by a worker at the Visitors Center. So much for public art.
I am a concerned artist and citizen, and I hope that the populist view of public art and art in general goes away. Yes, a few cans of paint, dedicated support, and acknowledgment that cities are indeed more than pothole-free roads, and so forth would be welcome. Public art is not just for the sides of buildings or steel images in a parking lot. Come inside some of the other alternative art venues and talk to real artists.
