It’s That Time O’ Year Again: Music Awards
On pg. 18 is the ballot for our 12th annual Fort Worth Weekly Music Awards. The ballot also – technology gods willing – will be up online at www.fwweekly.com. The only thing different this year is the addition of a new category, DJ, an uber-niche genre about which most of us, I bet, know next to nothing, probably because we live in backwater Fort Worth and not upscale Dallas. Nevertheless, I got enough e-mails over the past year to warrant including our turntablist friends. As you may (or may not) know, as part of our celebration of local music every year, we take over a handful of Sundance Square-area clubs and put on a daylong festival featuring performances by select nominees (or nominees who happen to be available). About 5,000 people came and went throughout the day last year and saw some killer shows. Last year we had four venues. This year, on Sun., June 22, we’re going to have five: 8.0 Bar and Café, Bent Lounge, The Flying Saucer Draught Emporium, Paddy Red’s, and Scat Jazz Lounge. We’ve already got some bad-asses confirmed: Black Tie Dynasty (acoustic), The Burning Hotels, Calhoun, the cut*off, Darth Vato, Collin Herring, April Geesbreght, Goodwin, Jefferson Colby, Lifters, Merkin, Pablo and the Hemphill 7, Stephen Pointer, Pretty Baby, Rivercrest Yacht Club, Stumptone, Tame … Tame and Quiet, Telegraph Canyon, Titanmoon, Whiskey Folk Ramblers, and more. We also will be selling a compilation CD of select nominees’ music that we have produced, available at both the Weekly offices and at the concert. All I’ll say is that the track listing is pretty diverse and switches moods rather seamlessly. Proceeds will benefit our charity sponsor, SafeHaven of Tarrant County. Via the sale of our comp CDs over the past three years, we’ve raised nearly $10,000 for the organization for abused women and children. For info on SafeHaven, see www.womenshaven.org. … When my chums and I were under-age, lo, these eons ago, we amused ourselves by devising schemes to acquire alcohol. And look how we turned out: international men of leisure. Here and now, a community of under-age or barely of-age Latinos has been taking over La Rumba in the Stockyards once every couple months and doing what we could have never done: having alcohol-free fun – and while exercising! A slew of dance crews, including Cumbiaholics, Envuyz, Famuz Lat-N-Starz, K-otic Kraz3, Lunachickz, Mizz Krunk Starz, New Edition (not Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill, and company’s smooove ’80s-era vocal group), Non-Stop 700 Dance Krew, and more groups afraid of the letter “s” and hard “c”’s, will battle for krush-groovin’ supremacy – and cash prizes (up to $500) -- on Sun., May 25, at 2513 Rodeo Plaza as part of Total Pandemonium 3, produced by Smooth Vega, perennial Music Awards winner in the R&B/Rap category. The main event will be musical, however. Sony Records rapper and million-album seller Lil’ Flip will take the stage and drop rhymes, with Twin Texas and 2 Over All.
