College Songs
The local universities have all opened their fall semesters, and this week they all put on musical events to introduce their departments to new students and signal to the old-timers that another round of performances is about to begin. TCU begins with longtime Bolshoi Opera bass singer Mischa Svetlov. The Tchaikovsky songs in his Thursday night recital are clearly the drawing card, yet the more interesting items are likely to be the ones by Modest Mussorgsky, whose songs rumble with black humor and despair, and Georgi Sviridov, a Soviet--era composer with a folk music bent (in accordance with the Stalin regime’s wishes).
If organ music is more your speed, you don’t have to schlep over to the Meyerson this week. Linton Powell will be at UTA playing Bach, Widor, Couperin, and Vierne on the organ at Irons Recital Hall. (There really is nothing like the experience of hearing a live pipe organ.) Later on, the Sons of the San Joaquin will perform traditional western music and gospel at Texas Wesleyan, and pianist Gustavo Romero will play the first of seven Monday concerts at UNT that will encompass all of Mozart’s piano sonatas, rondos, and fantasies. The summer’s over, and it’s time once again for the schools to liven our evenings with music.
