A good man, so the song says, is hard to find. Just ask Maddie, the protagonist in Bruce Graham’s 1994 play Desperate Affection, which makes its regional premiere this week at Circle Theatre. She’s an attractive, quirky actress who lives in a messy New York City apartment (not the kind you see on Friends), and she’s just met Richard, who appears to be the ideal man — the kind you see only in movies. Of course, in movies, there’s usually a catch, some dark secret that sends the relationship spiraling into oblivion. Will that be the case with Richard? Unexpected answers abound in the downtown theatre’s production of Graham’s risqué suspense-comedy.

Heading the cast is Casa Mañana staffer Gigi Cervantes, whom we enjoyed in Circle Theatre’s The Last Night of Ballyhoo a few seasons back. Besides acting, directing, and teaching at Casa, Cervantes is also a singer-songwriter who’s appeared at the Kerrville Folk Festival and released a couple of c.d.’s. Playing opposite her is Matthew Tomlanovich, a newcomer to Circle Theatre who’s taught at SMU and appeared in numerous productions in Dallas, Off-Broadway, and around the country. Susan Sargeant, last seen onstage in Circle Theatre’s Ad Wars, directs.

Previews start at 7:30pm Wed-Thu, and the champagne opening is at 7:30pm Fri. Regular show times are 7:30pm Thu-Fri and 4pm and 8:30pm Saturday — although there’s no Saturday matinee this week, perhaps to give the cast and crew a chance to recover from the effects of the champagne the night before. — Ken Shimamoto

Desperate Affection runs thru Nov 22 at Circle Theatre, 230 W 4th St, FW. Tickets are $10-30. Call 817-877-3040.
