Only the Strong Survive
For his loyal readers, the novels of E. Lynn Harris have been juicy pleasures. His books, including Not a Day Goes By, Any Way the Wind Blows, and Abide With Me (note his appropriation of song titles) carry plots laden with scandal and intrigue that allow handsome, virile, well-to-do African-American men to make tons of romantic and sexual conquests, both male and female. His most recent books, though, have shown his more serious side. In his latest novel, A Love of My Own, his characters familiar from previous novels respond to a changing world in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. He is currently receiving excellent reviews for his memoir, What Becomes of the Brokenhearted. In startling contrast with the soapy world of his novels, the memoir details his childhood in Arkansas, sexual abuse by his stepfather, his struggle to come out of the closet, suicide attempt in 1990, and the path that led him to his writing career.
The author will be signing copies of his books at a couple of Dallas bookstores on Sunday, but on Monday he comes to the Fort Worth Public Library to discuss his work and read from his memoir. Seating is limited, so make sure to get your tickets, which are available by mail or at selected branches.
