Changing Scenes

Summer isn’t technically over until next week, but the local arts groups are treating it that way, with classical music ensembles starting their seasons and fall Gallery Night taking place this weekend. The film series that lay dormant the last few months at TCU and UNT are also clicking on. The Lone Star Film Society’s Classics at the Modern series has been going through the summer, but they’re beginning anew as well in their own way. This week’s selection marks the start of their “Celebrity Choice” program, in which the movies screened are chosen by a local famous person who will be on hand to discuss the film.

Sportswriter Dan Jenkins kicks off the program (sorry!), and though you might expect him to bring in a football movie, instead he’s toting a fascinating personal choice. Julie Andrews stars in The Americanization of Emily, which was released in 1964, two months after Mary Poppins and four and a half months before The Sound of Music, so it catches her in the first flower of stardom. She plays a World War II widow who falls for an American soldier (James Garner) who’s destined to be sacrificed as the first victim in the Normandy invasion. Screenwriter Paddy Chayefsky of Network fame injects some antiwar satire that’s unusual for a Hollywood movie of that time period.

The Americanization of Emily screens at 7pm at 3200 Darnell St, FW. Tickets are $5.50-7.50. Call 817-738-9215.
