You’d think that with the destruction of the boundaries between “high” and “low” art that there’d be more crazy crossovers here. But, no: The punks stay with the punks, the folkies with the folkies, the jazzbos with the jazzbos, and so on.
With one exception. A couple of months ago, when Carl Pack and Lee Allen started what has become a regular Wednesday night Wreck Room event — Carl and Lee’s Invitational Improv Jam — a guy with a violin started showing up and blowing everyone away. From hanging out at the Wreck, Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra musician and Juilliard graduate Steve Huber met and began jamming with Wreck regular and six-string-picker extraordinaire Darrin Kobetich. The duo, Kobetich-Huber, has played a smattering of shows and will return to its birthplace this Saturday, opening for nuevo bossa nova cats Sleeplab.
The two bands should complement each other nicely. With a twin attack of jazzy acoustic guitars, Sleeplab is pure flavor for your ear, while Kobetich-Huber can get eerily dramatic. Huber uses assorted effects to conjure sounds as diverse as moaning synthesizers and twinkling glockenspiel, and Kobetich often teases high-lonesome melancholy from his dobro. After Kobetich-Huber’s epic sweep, Sleeplab will provide a nice change of pace.
