The Romans and Tibetans regarded the trumpet as sacred; the Israelites allowed only priests to play the instrument, and the King James Bible is filled with references to trumpets as the voices of the angels. Those who feel similarly for this bastion of classical and jazz music will surely want to attend the 28th annual International Trumpet Guild Conference, which takes place at TCU this weekend.
The lectures are on topics such as Louis Armstrong and the trumpet’s place in opera, and a symposium will examine the medical problems that trumpeters face. Among the musical highlights are performances by the U.S. Air Force Band of the West and the Ensemble de Trompettes de Lyon, which utilizes a number of different trumpets, including bugle, cornet, and piccolo trumpet. Dallas Wind Symphony will accompany three soloists in performances of trumpet music, including André Jolivet’s percussion-heavy, jazz-derived Trumpet Concerto No. 2. The main event, though, will be a performance by Terence Blanchard and his band. The jazz virtuoso is known for his film scores, especially for his work on most of Spike Lee’s films (though his best is his sumptuously beautiful piano score for Kasi Lemmons’ The Caveman’s Valentine), but the extra work hasn’t kept him from taking his hard bop sound in new directions. His performance ends this glorious festival for trumpet devotees.
