The Show 11/9/05
By Anthony Mariani
Ain’t a damn thing wrong with party bands. So many of Cowtown’s original performers and groups are so friggin serious that a little booty-shaking loudness can serve as a nice palate-cleanser now and then. We wouldn’t recommend that anyone subsist on a steady diet of good-timin’ tunes (for fear of brain-rot), but for those always sinisterly brief moments when life seems to be working out as planned, might as well celebrate while you can.
Not counting cover and tribute bands, Cowtown has its share of fun-lovin’ criminals, including Darth Vato (who are good enough to listen to even when you’re pissed off), Mingofishtrap, and Villain Vanguard. Mixing up bluegrass with reggae with R&B with a touch of jazz, the Villains typically incorporate horns and funked-out grooves into otherwise rocking sets, kind of like Austin’s Ugly Americans but not as effin annoying.
The Villains — Bryce Harp, Jeff Dazey, Justin Barbee, Dino Villainueva, Justin Williams, Bobby Friesen — have been together for about two years but have only recently begun playing on a regular basis at some of Fort Worth/North Texas’ party-friendly clubs.
Thu with Mingofishtrap at Ridglea Theater, 6025 Camp Bowie Blvd, FW. 817-738-9500. Sat at The Moon, 2911 W Berry St, FW. 817-926-9600.
