Mysteree

A couple of months ago, I noticed Mysteree opening a Thursday night Wreck Room show. They soundchecked with a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Knocking On Heaven’s Door,” and I made some snide remark about the group being more appropriate for the Pour House than the Wreck. (Every obnoxious hipster derides cover bands, y’know.) But their originals, in a groove-oriented Dave Matthews Band vein, were impressive — they actually sounded better than the two out-of-town acts higher up on the bill. I saw them again in December, valiantly holding a fair-sized crowd in the Ridglea Theater’s lounge while the masses thronged downstairs awaiting the Spoonfed Tribe experience.
A bunch of TCU brats they might be, but they’re TCU brats with more of a musical pedigree than you might expect. Frontman Chad Durham taught himself to play guitar and piano and self-released a couple of solo c.d.’s before joining the band Five Minutes More. Guitarist Scott Boldt studied piano and classical guitar, played in the Christian band 9th Hour, and took jazz drum lessons from Bertha Coolidge’s Rich Stitzel. Drummer Shaun Hayes is a former student of local heavies Eddie Dunlap, Joey Carter, and Brian West, and taught drums himself as a teenager, in addition to doing loads of session work. Bassist Brandon Pitt was originally trained as a classical saxophonist.
Together since December 2001, these guys have performed regularly at the Aardvark and the Ridglea in Cowtown and the Flying Saucer and Birraporetti’s in Arlington. The work paid off; their show is uncommonly tight and professional for such a new band. Their set should be light on covers, since they already have two c.d.’s worth of material to draw from — an “unplugged” effort, recorded before they hired the rhythm section, plus a recently released e.p.
