Several Metroplex bands — including Dana’s Fast, F.F.T.N., and Monkeyshyne — will perform a benefit show Fri. for Matt Setzer of the local rock band Frolic, at Club Clearview (2806 Elm St, Dallas; 214-939-0077). Setzer passed away late last month in an automobile accident, according to a press release from the band. The release goes on to say that “Matt always has been and always will be loved like a brother by all who knew him.” Proceeds from the show will go toward Setzer’s family. For more info, go to www.frolicweb.com. ... Cadillac Fraf, another supremely interesting and articulate Wreck Room employee, has a new project. The Mockingbird Cartel is a six-piece that burns with post-punk ideas about crafting engaging, erudite country-fied music. They play Sat. at Pedro’s Trailer Park (2371 White Settlement Rd, FW; 817-335-1548). ... The SuicideGirls is a non-grimy, “sex-positive” burlesque revue of tattooed women and men that tours, shows skin on www.suicidegirls.com, and does whatever burlesque revues do when not actually burlesquing, like promote their brands by holding band contests. With Playboy.com, the SuicideGirls now happen to be on the hunt for “America’s best unsigned band.” The lucky winner will get to choose from either $2,500 in studio time or an official Playboy “Hottie” Gibson guitar (whatever the hell that is) and get to open for the SuicideGirls once. Oh, boy, HearSay can hear you say. Another multi-national corporation trying to co-opt the underground — and giving out lame prizes to boot. But before you write off this contest, consider that as a contestant there may be an outside chance you’ll run into Heff and — if you’re really lucky — one or more of his better “halves.” Go to www.playboy.com for more info. ... A special treat has been taking place pretty frequently in very weird quarters: Rock legend Bill Ham has been performing every Thu. with not-so-legendary-but-should-be genre-defying yokel Eric Zukoski at My Martini, a restaurant/bar that apparently doesn’t live or die on catering to the Martini-drinking crowd (e.g., social misfits trapped in 1959 and/or ‘99, trust-fund babies, and all-around sleazemeisters). You may remember Ham, ZZ Top’s original producer and spiritual member, from such great outfits as Clint Black, Freddy Fender, and Cher’s backing band. (Word on the street is that Ham actually once made-out with the plastic diva — sweet.) My Martini is located at 859 NE Green Oaks Blvd, Arlington; 817-461-4424. ... Welcome, Willie! Texas’ favorite tangled-up-in-taxes troubadour Willie Nelson will be bringing his longtime Fourth of July Picnic to the Stockyards this year. Of the location, Willie said, “Fort Worth is one of my hometowns. I’ve played all the beer joints here.” The actual concert will take place on the North Forty, a 27-acre field next to Billy Bob’s Texas. Tickets go on sale Mon., April 26. ... Larry Joe Taylor’s 16th Annual Texas Music Festival starts with a bang (and probably a bong) today (Wed.), when the state’s best old songwriter (Guy Clark) and best newbie (Bruce Robison) share a bill. Aside from this one show, however, the following three days trot out mostly the same entertainers from previous years singing the same songs to the same drunks. At least Taylor banned cruising the campground by vehicle this year. Last year’s crowd loved driving around in their step-dads’ chrome-plated dualies and blasting Kid Rock instead of listening to campfire pickers.
