No Pointy Heads Here
A few weeks ago the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater released a ranking of “America’s Most Literate Cities.” (You know where this is going already, don’t you?) The UWWers rank cities on the basis of citizens’ education levels, the number of publications, libraries, and booksellers, and the city’s newspaper circulation. Out of the 79 largest cities in the country, Fort Worth ranked 56th in education, 65th in publications, 32nd in newspaper circulation, 33rd in libraries (let’s hear it for the librarians!), and 56th in booksellers. Cowtown’s overall ranking: 56th. So — go Star-Telegram, for pulling us up from the basement. (Although with the S-T’s redesign, we fear for next year’s stats. And we kinda figure Fort Worth Weekly’s circulation numbers weren’t exactly a big factor.)
But overall, folks, this could use some work. Hey, here’s an idea — what if the city took some tax-increment money (TIF, to you pikers) and set it aside for a kind of education superstore? Surely there’s a megacorporation that could front the deal, to get City Hall’s attention. After all, with those numbers, education in this town could indeed be deemed an “unproductive, underdeveloped or blighted area” — or at least as blighted as, say, the new RadioShack downtown campus.
