Voices in My Head
The meteoric career of Sarah Kane continues to leave trails all over the world. The English playwright made a splash on the London stage with her 1995 play Blasted, which sickened many theater critics and drew vituperative reviews. Lost in the widespread disgust over the play’s graphic depictions of rape and mutilation were Kane’s innovative hodgepodge of theatrical styles and her vivid writing, which owed as much to Joy Division, Radiohead, and PJ Harvey as to Beckett and Pinter. She wrote Crave, which many consider to be her best play, in 1998 under a pseudonym and found the satisfaction of laudatory reviews from many of the same critics who blasted Blasted. Sadly, it wasn’t enough. In 1999, she lost her lifelong battle with depression and committed suicide in a mental hospital at the age of 28.
Kane considered Crave to be a dramatic reading rather than a full-fledged play; it concerns four characters with letters for names who deliver their lines while seated on chairs and represent the different parts of a single consciousness. A new player on Fort Worth’s theatrical scene marks its audacious debut with a staging of Crave. Firestarter Productions is the enterprise of San Antonio native and TCU graduate Jaime Castañeda, and arrives with the stated purpose of bringing provocative avant-garde theater works from Europe to our city. With most of the local theater companies nearing the end of their seasons, this inaugural production should give us a welcome jolt.
