Breaking Up is, um, Easy to Do
Must be that time o’ year again: Time for local bands to do the dissolve. Aside from Valve (and another big outfit that for personal reasons HearSay can’t divulge more info on), TCU faves Middleground are also reportedly about to pack the Hyundai for a trip Splitsville. HearSay thinks it got the word directly from the boys. Happened at a gig a couple weeks ago. In between songs, lead singer Brent Wood apparently said something about a “last show.” Hmmm — a last show? Probably has something to do with the Fort Worth Weekly’s Midas touch. Just a month ago, the 2003 Fort Worth Weekly Music Awards ballot first announced Middleground’s “Unharden Your Heart” as a nominee for song of the year. So there you have it: Soon as we jump on a good local band, said local band decides to break up (e.g., Sunday Drunks, Lady Pearl [R.I.P.], Dead Sexy).
A funny aside: When Wood asked the crowd if anyone read the Weekly, as his way of segueing into telling the audience about the “Unharden Your Heart” nomination, he was greeted with silence — like, “What’s a Weekly?” The reason behind the quietude: college kids aren’t very aware. Probably because they’re all overwhelmed by business math homework, smacking one another in the ass with pieces of lumber, and interning at daddy’s accounting firm. So Middleground: a “last show”? Certainly sad news for Greeks Fort Worth-wide. (And a note to Mr. Wood: Lose the shades indoors, dude. You look like a fly.)
Word on the street is that freshly graduated Wood, the mastermind behind Middleground, will be returning to his hometown of San Antonio to continue his musical journey. We here at the Weekly wish him and his bandmates well.
See Tendril!
Now HearSay doesn’t wanna step on Malcolm Mayhew’s toes, but your faithful columnist is gonna get a little nuts and, like Mayhew, regurgitate a club calendar listing for your reading pleasure. (Yeah, HearSay has cut back on the drinking about 90 percent, so “field research” has been hampered as a result.) The club is the Wreck Room, the date is tonight (Thurs. May 29), and the band is Tendril. No, the band hasn’t broken up; it was just, um, sleeping. Some call the boys in Tendril elitists, because of their reluctance to gig 300 days a year, like every other worth-a-shit band. Others, like HearSay, call ‘em smart. Their new disc, Anaphase, Baby!, basically kicks very big, very fluffy ass. Be alert for a more in-depth look at Tendril in these pages soon.
