The Old 97’s
Sunday nights on The Edge are starting to look like small weekly rebellions. As the Big Radio monster — like the kind that’s behind The Edge — continues gobbling up spots on the dial, the list of what songs can be played grows shorter. The point: The more tightening there is, the more “edgy” a program like “The Adventure Club” looks. The hope among the thousands of yokels who tune into the show every Sunday night is that Big Radio’s grip on programming won’t ever stifle Josh, the beloved, hipper-than-thou AC DJ. Support for the man is strong. Support for the show, which occasionally shines light on local acts, is even stronger.
The Adventure Club Celebration Show is like a little box of chocolates — you never know what you’re gonna get. Here are the stars of this year’s gig: The Old 97’s will headline. Eisley, a family affair of three cute girls and three cute boys, is known around these parts as the band that tours with Coldplay, signs with major labels (Warner Bros.), and gives HearSay the shivers. (A song off their major-label debut e.p. is getting some airplay on Big Radio across the nation.) Peter Schmidt, formerly of Funland and the recently dearly departed LCC (formerly Legendary Crystal Chandelier) will be playing a stripped-down set, featuring just piano and drum accompaniment. Opening will be Cordelane, which stars Taylor Reed, one of the show’s most requested artists, according to Josh.
Get there early, get a good seat, and help celebrate a flower in the weeds of big commercial radio. — Jonathan Rose
