Re-educating the Kids
To the editor: I have been reading your newspaper since its introduction, and this is the first time I have felt compelled to write to you. I am by choice and belief a liberal-thinking person.
The above-mentioned article failed to include the fact that many minority children are deprived of the basic fundamental values (i.e., the motivation and guidance to succeed, normally provided by family). The public school system is designed for educational purposes only, not to raise a child. That is, and should be, the parents’ function.
If we as a society lower our educational expectations in order to pass children who are unable to meet current standards (which, globally, are lower than other countries’) we would not be helping the “left-behind” kids. Such a course would only decrease the overall criteria that students are required to meet in order to be educated and functional members of our society. And that would be a disaster. These kids are our future leaders!
I understand that many minority (and not minority) children live in underprivileged conditions not of their making. Yes, we should make every effort, in every community, to try to help the underprivileged children. That does not mean that we should lower our educational levels.
