Idiosyncratic musical visionary Nathan Brown wears a lot of hats. In his old band, Nathan Brown’s R&B, he played keyboards and sang, channeling the spirits of ’70s Stevie Wonder and ’80s Prince. Next, he played frontman and guitar-wrestler for Pretend King, a rough-and-rowdy rock trio that recorded an intriguing set of demos (copies of which came charmingly packaged in zip-lock sandwich bags) before the group disintegrated during a tour of the South. He played drums on Goodwin’s initial recordings, and occasionally spells Dave Karnes on traps on jazz nights at the Moon. He’s also indisputably the best male cheerleader on the Metromess evening stage.
Brown’s latest venture, A.C. Identity, is something Entirely Other. In it, he’s teamed up with Dallasites Ken Jones (ex-Ohm) on guitar and Geoffrey Wossum on keyboard. Wossum played violin in Nathan Brown’s R&B, but Brown assures us, “He won’t be playing his shitty fiddle in this band.” The musicians describe their sound as “spacey but lo-fi” — think ’70s Kraftwerk, early ’90s Stereolab, and pre-Dark Side of the Moon Pink Floyd. Brown and Wossum play Casio keyboards through jam boxes and Brown sings, although he says, “it’s mostly talking.” Jones has been using an amp for his “fun guitar stuff,” but his bandmates plan to get him a ghetto blaster to play through. “We want to keep everything battery operated,” says Brown. “We’re a pretty corny band.”
The original song concepts were Jones’, but the writing process is collaborative. Their first recordings, now in progress, might be released on Brown’s “low-level record label,” Bandwrecker Music, which he’ll use to release material from his various projects. “The label’s name came from a friend of mine,” says Brown. “He said that whenever I join a band, it falls apart.” You’ve been warned — catch A.C. Identity while you still can.
